"Art itself has a primarily feminine energy to it. Not in the sense of it being female but containing yin energy or being a right brained attribute. A weapon like a sword has masculine energy, a yang energy. Weapons, which are associated with war, is a left brained attribute. So wielding a sword to make art creates an energetic balance. Bringing life to a creation using a tool of Destruction"
The contemporary expressionist has a very unique way of painting his abstract art. Instead of a brush, Jahzeal paints wielding only a katana samurai sword. He uses the sword to layer paint, develop textures and form gradients. Last but not least, he attacks the canvas. By slashing in paint, making bold marks that at times pierces or rips through the canvas itself, the artist forms a bold statement. This innovative style creates a new meaning to the phase “cutting the tension with a knife”. To juxtapose his unique style, the artist at times adds melted candle wax damaged canvas to form a healing aura and soften the mood.
In his more recent work he has adopted new elements to his unique style increasing the dynamic to each piece. Burning the canvas leaving crevices of texture and installing mirrors behind the canvas adding transcendental dimension.
To complement his samurai sword technique, Jahzeal uses fine far eastern patterned silks as the main focus of the garments. Also using cotton, he designs attire with a twist that cohesively go with the abstract. The paintings in tandem with the clothing produces the spirit of a modern warrior. Each article of clothing is unisex and they are prototypes in his clothing line LAEZHAJ.
Finally, instrumental soundscapes are created that take you on a journey sonically. The music casts a new lens of perspective on certain paintings enhancing your interpretation of the collection. Each instrumental has a link to the abstract and clothing but the whole soundtrack can be listened to for the entire exhibition.
